Davis to talk to him, he would take the time to talk with you right then." Stump Sons started when Gay Smith Poe, also known as "Stump," bought a cotton candy machine to take to area Little League games to make some extra money. It was her husband who added a snow cone machine, then a popcorn machine and, finally, a barbecue smoker. Poe At its height, the company was catering receptions for politicians such as Walter Mondale and Herman Talmadge, the U.S. synchronized swimming team during the 1996 Olympics, and the Taste of Atlanta. "We never expected it to grow the way it did," said Mrs.

Poe. "But before I knew it, we were going to events at Lake Lanier and Stone Mountain Park. For Mr. Poe, the best part of running the food service was interacting with the customers, said his wife. "Sometimes we'd be in a store or out somewhere and he'd see a woman who was so ugly she could stop a clock," said Mrs. Poe. "But he'd go up and talk to her and call her a pretty lady and she'd perk up like a flower that just got a drink of water." In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made to the Woodstock First Baptist Building Fund, 777 Neese Road, Woodstock, GA 30188. Richard Poe took his wife's cotton candy stand and turned it into a food service known for its barbecue. At Stump Sons, Mr. Pope was known as "Papa Poe" because he was like a father to employees and customers. "Sometimes we'd be so busy at an event that people would be lined up 20 or 30 deep," said Don Wencel of Marietta, who had worked with the company for the past 10 years.
